Lock and Load for the 2026 New York Firearms Safety Test – Shoot for Success!

Keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction at all times is indeed the primary rule of gun safety. This rule is fundamental because it minimizes the risk of accidental injury or death. If a firearm is pointed in a safe direction, even if it is discharged unintentionally, the shot will not hit anyone or cause damage. This principle reinforces the responsibility that gun owners have to ensure their firearms are under control and to mitigate potential hazards.

The other options, while also important safety practices, describe secondary rules that support overall gun safety. For example, using the correct ammunition is crucial for the firearm’s function, keeping the gun unloaded until needed reduces the chance of accidental discharge, and storing guns and ammunition separately is vital for securing firearms, particularly in homes with children. Each of these practices is essential, but the priority of keeping the firearm pointed safely is what underpins all other safety measures.
